TOKYO (AFP) - A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit off southern Japan on Monday, the second strong tremor in one day, and a tsunami advisory was issued for nearby islands, the meteorological agency said.

 
The quake struck at 7:11 pm (1011 GMT) about 140 kilometres (87 miles) southwest of Ishigakijima island at a depth of 10 kilometres, said the agency which added that a 50 centimetre high tsunami wave could be expected.


No major sea level changes were reported within 30 minutes of the quake.
