Latin nouns
A lot of words in English come from the Latin language. In Latin, singular nouns end in "-us" and plural nouns end in "-i".
For example:
1 octopus, 2 octopi 1 cactus, 2 cacti
... but a lot of people say "octopuses" and "cactuses".
